Testosterone: Estrogen Relationship:
Estrogens are predominantly a class of female hormones but men also produce small amounts. The dominant male hormone testosterone is converted to estrogens naturally in the body through the enzyme aromatase. Aromatase is found in large quantities in the liver, testes, ovaries and fat tissues. When athletes supersede their “normal” production of testosterone by using nutritional supplements or anabolic steroids, their aromatase activity will concomitantly rise causing the concentrations of estrogens to increase. This unwanted rise in estrogens may manifest a physiological change within the body (development of breast mass, shrinkage of testes and an up-regulation of fat deposition).
The Chrysin Connection:
Research has shown that Chrysin can block the conversion of testosterone and androstenedione to estradiol and estrone (2).* The results demonstrate this naturally occurring flavonoid can inhibit this conversion (aromatization) by competing with testosterone and androstenedione for the binding site on the aromatase enzyme (3).* By blocking aromatization, excessive production of estrogens may be reduced, allowing testosterone concentrations to increase.
