Free radicals are highly-reactive, oxygen-containing chemicals
formed as by-products of normal cellular metabolism, or in

smoke, herbicides, pesticides, environmental toxins, drugs,
radiation, fried foods and alcohol. Free radicals are toxic
because they can attack and weaken cell membranes, inactivate
enzymes and damage genetic material in the cell nucleus. Free

and death.
The body’s own vital free-radical scavenging enzymes include
superoxide dysmutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, and catalase.
Although research shows that taking such enzymes orally
does not directly increase their levels in tissues, taking antioxidant
vitamins and cofactors (vitamins C, E, B1 and B2, beta
carotene, selenium, zinc, manganese and others) can raise levels
by supporting enzyme production. In this and other ways,
